Reliable, Affordable Waste Services
In June 2024, GFL announced its intention to sell its services to Priority Waste LLC. The Board of Trustees approved the assignment of its contract to Priority effective July 1, 2024. This contract was set to expire in November 2025. Instead of seeking proposals for a new contract through an RFP process, and in spite of complaints of poor service from residents, Scio approved a two-year extension of the existing contract with a reduced monthly charge. The contract extension runs through November 2027. In summary, Priority has been awarded two contracts with Scio Township with zero competition or competitive bids.
Garbage collection is a fundamental service and cornerstone of modern community life. It is essential for public health, environmental protection, community aesthetics, and economic stability. When the system is working, people can take it for granted.
When there are problems, everyone is affected. In Scio Township, Priority is having problems: missed pickup dates, sometimes two weeks in a row, poor customer service, lack of responsiveness to customer calls and complaints.
We must have an effective and rigorous RFP process in place long before November 2027. But we can’t wait until then to solve the problems with Priority.
If elected, Mark will push for greater accountability from Priority Waste and implementation of a thorough Request for Proposal process prior to renewal of the contract.
Solution: High Standards. Common Sense.
